Introduction
IIIT Hyderabad and IDRBT Hyderabad jointly offer an interdisciplinary PhD programme in the intersection of Computer Science/Electronics and Communications Engineering with banking and financial domain.
The primary objective of this PhD Programme is to train researchers in analyzing complex financial systems, developing innovative models and addressing challenges for banking and financial sector with help of latest technologies. PhD students in this programme are expected to produce original research that advances theoretical and practical knowledge in banking and financial sector.

- UGC NET Qualified for PhD with current validity in CSE/ECE and allied.
- Valid GATE score in CSE/ECE and allied. The requirement of GATE score is waived for candidates with relevant bachelor’s degree in engineering from the Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) and other IITs with CGPA >= 8.0 (out of 10).
Admission Procedure
- Applicants are first screened based on their application, which includes their academic performance in relevant subjects, standard exam scores (such as GATE/NET), merit scholarships, and CV/relevant work experience in IT industry/R&D labs.
- Shortlisted applicants are invited in person for a written test and/or a technical interview. Final selection is based on performance in the interview. The decision of the interview committee is final and binding.
- Technical Interview will be conducted by a panel consisting of subject matter experts nominated by IIITH/IDRBT
How to apply?
Residency requirements:
Minimum is 6 semesters. The maximum duration of residency for a Ph.D is 10 semesters. To continue beyond 5 years, explicit approval of the Dean (R&D) needs to be obtained.
Fellowship and Other Support:
The Institute offers Fellowship to eligible (Indian) students as per prevailing (Ministry of Education, GoI) norms, as applicable from time to time. At present the fellowship amount is Rs. 37,000/- per month for Junior Research Fellow (JRF) and Rs. 42,000/- per month for Senior Research Fellow (JRF) (governed as per MoE letter F. No. 32-18/2023-TS-l, dated. 13.09.2023). It will be continued based on satisfactory academic and research performance for the duration of the programme.
Other Support and Facilities:
IDRBT will provide the Fellowship and other support facilities as indicated below.
- Tuition fee paid to IIITH (for a max 5 years only) by the candidate will be reimbursed by IDRBT after successful completion of the PhD by the Research Fellow.
- Accommodation: IDRBT will provide accommodation in its Quarter at L and M Block, RBI Quarters, Begumpet, Hyderabad on First Cum First Serve basis. 1BHK family accommodation may be provided based on availability and assessment by the Institute.
- The PhD student must pay for accommodation charges (Rs.750/Rs1000 for Single Room/1BHK per month). These will be adjusted on monthly basis from the Fellowship amount.
- IDRBT sponsors participation in seminar/conference for presentation in recognized Forum in India as well as overseas.
- IDRBT provides the student with a laptop for academic use for the duration of their enrollment. The laptop shall remain the property of the Institute and must be returned in good working conditions upon completion or termination of the Student’s enrollment, unless otherwise agreed in writing. The student shall assume full ownership of the gadget upon completion of all payments, with the diminishing value duly accounted for in the final settlement.
- The PhD student must put in 12 hours of work per week in operational/ongoing project works/ academic activities/research areas as indicated by the Institute.
All rules and regulations including assessments will be in terms of stipulated framework of IIIT Hyderabad. In assessment process at all stage there will be active participation from IDRBT.
